The Royal Python native to West and Central Africa belongs to a species of Pythons. It is known to make a great pet to humans. Also known as the Ball Python, the Royal Python is a domicile but the shy creature that prefers to remain in captivity under normal conditions.
Because we are taking them home as our pets, we responsibly and very kindly need to set up a habitat to which they can simulate as their own. They need proper lighting, air conditioning, adequate size of the vivarium, and their favourite foods. Although all of these topics have a specific answer, it is still a debatable topic: “What kind of Lights do Ball Pythons?”
Table of Contents
Why do Ball Pythons need heat and light?
Sunlight is the ultimate source of heat and light on the earth. Unlike us, animals do not have electrical appliances to regulate their own body temperature. Thus, reptiles like Ball Pythons do need the sun to regulate the body temperature, and also to bask.

What is maximum Power outage needed by Ball Python?
Your ball python’s lighting fixtures do have to be more than 75W. It can be 25W like Westinghouse Lighting Corp 25-watt or 50W like Exo Terra Day Sun Glo Daylight 50W or 75W like Chromalux Full Spectrum 75 Watt, but unless the tank is a huge one, above 100W should not be considered.
Why to Turn on/ off the lights in Ball python enclosure?
You do not want it to char under the heat of the bulb. You have to maintain an equatorial distribution by turning on the lights for 12 hours while letting it live the daytime sunlight when the lights are off. That way, you can regulate its body temperature and not confuse your slithering buddy!
What are the kinds of lights do your Ball Pythons need?
There are only a few kinds of lighting systems available for your ball python, namely, Incandescent, Infrared, Ultraviolet, LEDs, Ceramics, Halogens.
All heat lamps have a maximum and a minimum recommended distance that should be maintained from the snake to ensure its safety.
1. Incandescent lights or lamps
Incandescent lights or lamps like CFLs emit both heat and light. But if they are used inside your python’s captive, they can hurt your pet.

2. Infrared lamps or lights
Infrared lamps or lights are the best ones you will ever find for your ball python. Infrared is detectable to Ball Pythons and is quite healthy for them.

3. Ultraviolet Lights
If your snake frequently basks under the sun, it does not need an Ultraviolet light source. Because UV lights only intend to emit the ultraviolet rays simulating a natural habitat for the snake. Mercury Vapor Lamps emit both UVA and UVB lights.

4. Halogen Lights
Halogens are lights that can lit up your whole house and provide adequate heat to your home and to your snake’s vivarium. So, unless you live in a frigid region, do not plan to buy it. Dimming a halogen bulb reduces its lifespan, and not doing so will reduce your pet’s lifespan.
5. Ceramics Lights
Ceramics, as I said before, do not emit light. Actually, infrared rays are used inside ceramic or porcelain sockets to emit heat and block the light. This is so because Infrared lights emit a red light that is visible to humans.
